Self-pay rates

Self-Pay Counseling Rates

Not using insurance? Self-pay rates depend on your counselor's level of training. Every counselor who is not yet fully licensed works under the clinical supervision of a licensed professional.

$25
per session

Graduate Intern

A master's-level counseling student completing supervised clinical training.

$55
per session

Pre-Licensed Counselor

A graduate counselor gaining supervised experience toward licensure.

$85
per session

Provisionally Licensed Counselor

A counselor with a provisional license, practicing under supervision.

$150
per session

Fully Licensed Counselor

An independently licensed counselor.

The same rate applies to your first session, individual sessions, and couples or family sessions.

Sliding scale: If cost is a barrier, a sliding scale may be available on a case-by-case basis. Ask our care team when you call.

Other ways to pay

Out-of-Network Benefits, HSA/FSA & Cancellations

Out-of-network benefits

If your plan isn't listed, you can pay the self-pay rate and we'll provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. How much you get back depends on your plan's out-of-network benefits.

HSA and FSA cards

You can use a health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA) card to pay for counseling sessions, copays, and coinsurance.

Cancellation policy

Please give at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations and missed sessions are charged a $50 fee, which insurance does not cover.

Questions to ask your insurance

  • Is outpatient mental health care covered, and is Grace in network?
  • What is my copay or coinsurance per session?
  • Have I met my deductible this year?
  • Do I need a referral or prior authorization?
  • Is there a limit on the number of sessions?
  • Are online (telehealth) sessions covered the same way?

Your Right to a Good Faith Estimate

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate explaining how much your medical care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don't have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.

  • You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.
  • Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.
  • If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.
  • Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 1-800-985-3059.

Insurance & Fees: Frequently Asked Questions

Is Christian counseling covered by insurance?

Yes, in most cases. Grace's counselors are licensed or work under licensed supervision, so sessions are billed as outpatient mental health care. Faith integration doesn't affect coverage. Read more in Is Christian Counseling Covered by Insurance?

Do you accept Medicaid?

We accept PA Medical Assistance through Community Care Behavioral Health (CCBH) for Allegheny County residents and Carelon Behavioral Health for Westmoreland County residents, as well as CHIP. If you live in another county, call our care team to talk through your options.

Do you accept Medicare?

We accept Aetna Medicare PPO plans with approval from an Aetna representative. If you have a different Medicare plan, ask our care team before scheduling.

How much does counseling cost without insurance?

Self-pay sessions are $25 with a graduate intern, $55 with a pre-licensed counselor, $85 with a provisionally licensed counselor, and $150 with a fully licensed counselor. A sliding scale may be available case by case.

Does insurance cover online Christian counseling?

Many plans cover telehealth the same way as in-person sessions, and the plans listed on this page apply to online Christian counseling too. Ask your plan whether telehealth has a different copay.

Will insurance cover marriage or couples counseling?

It depends on your plan. Some plans cover couples or family sessions when they are part of treatment for a diagnosed condition, and others do not. Our care team can help you check, and self-pay rates are the same for Christian marriage counseling as for individual sessions.

What is an EAP, and how do I use it?

An employee assistance program is a benefit through your employer that usually covers a set number of free counseling sessions. Contact your EAP for an authorization number, then share it with our care team when you schedule.

What if I need to cancel?

Please give at least 24 hours' notice. Late cancellations and missed sessions are charged a $50 fee, which insurance does not cover.

Rates and accepted plans are current as of October 2026 and may change. Coverage is determined by your insurance plan, not by Grace Christian Counseling.
