Do you have favorite people you follow on social media whom you have never met? If so, why are you following them? Are they posting or blogging about the struggles they are facing or are they sharing only the good? Does their energy bring you down or lift you up? We’ve all been told to be mindful of the people we chose to hang around with because, “We become who we hang around with.” The same is true with what you allow yourself to listen to, read, and watch through social media. In fact, the Bible reiterates this in 1 Corinthians 15:33, “Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals,” Proverbs 22:24-25, “Make no friendship with a man given to anger, nor go with a wrathful man, lest you learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare,” and Proverbs 13:20, “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” Being encouraged by social media influencers is great if what they are putting out for you aligns with your core beliefs. Psalm 1:1-3 reds, “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.” God wants us to do more than strive, he wants us to thrive! So why are so many of us living in a state of striving?
Striving is what we do when we do enough to just get by. It implies living paycheck-to-paycheck, working a job that pays enough to allow survival but not comfort, feeling well enough to do what you have to, but not things you want to without pain.
